CHOOSING THE AMERICAN BULLY
Bringing a puppy home is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's important to choose a breed that fits your lifestyle and living situation. Different breeds have different energy levels, temperaments, and care needs, so considering your daily routine, activity level, and space is key. The American Bully is a popular breed known for its muscular build, gentle temperament, and loyalty. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what makes the American Bully unique and what to know if you’re considering adding one to your family:
Origin and Background
- The American Bully breed was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s by crossing various breeds, primarily the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, with some influence from other bulldog breeds. The goal was to create a dog with a stocky, muscular build and a loyal, gentle temperament suited to family life.
Appearance
• American Bullies are known for their distinctive look: a muscular, well-defined build, broad chest, and powerful, compact frame.
They come in four size varieties recognized by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC):
Pocket: Smaller and compact (about 14-17 inches).
Standard: The standard, medium-sized build (about 17-20 inches).
Classic: Similar to the standard but with a lighter body frame.
XL: The largest type, standing over 20 inches.
We currently have waitlists for Standard/Classic & XL with coat colours that vary from Lilac, Blue, Tri & Merles.
Temperament and Personality
•Despite their intimidating appearance, American Bullies are known for their friendly, gentle nature and loyalty to family. They are excellent with children and are typically very tolerant and patient, making them great family pets. They’re also known to be protective but are not naturally aggressive; they’re more likely to bond with people than guard territory.
Training and Socialization
•American Bullies are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement training. Early socialization is important to help them interact well with other animals and people. They’re eager to please, so consistency, reward-based training, and early discipline make a big difference.
Exercise Needs
•They require moderate exercise to stay healthy and burn off energy, but they don’t have the same high-energy demands as other breeds like Border Collies or Huskies. Daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation (like interactive toys or basic agility training) are ideal.
Health and Lifespan
•American Bullies are generally healthy dogs with a lifespan of around 10-12 years. Like many breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia, skin allergies, and eye conditions. As a reputable breeder, we screen for these issues to minimize health risks. All JBK dogs undergo Embark Genetic Testing alongside Vet Consultations prior to being part of our breeding program.
Diet and Nutrition
•A high-quality, protein-rich diet is important for their muscular build. Ensure they have food that meets their age, size, and activity level. Avoid overfeeding to prevent weight gain, which can lead to joint issues. JBK has been a registered Breeder with Purina Pro Club since 2023.
Grooming and Care
•Their short, smooth coat requires minimal grooming. Brushing once a week and regular baths will keep their coat in good condition. Regular dental care, nail trimming, and ear cleaning are also important.
